~ Petunjuk Bagaimana Memilih Battery

Q: How to select a battery that fits the application?
A: First of all, determine the type of battery that generally fits the application.
»Automotive batteries for conventional cars.
»Stationary batteries for power back-up, solar home system.
»Traction batteries for electric forklifts, electric cars.
For the right type of your car, please refer to the table of battery types for cars.

Q: How to determine a suitable battery for your motor vehicle?
A: Refer to your motor vehicle manual to know the battery specification, size and minimum standard recommended by the carmaker.
Should you consider using a larger battery specification, you need to consider the dimension of the place where the battery sits and your cars alternator specification as well as the electrical load of the vehicle (cassette player, AC, power windows, sound system, etc). Therefore when the insufficient alternator is not replaced (for battery recharge), the larger battery will be meaningless and short of electricity supply.

Q: How to check your newly bought battery?
A: »Check the condition of the battery.
»Check the seals covering the cells' holes. They must be properly glued.
»Check the vent plugs. They must tightly close the vent hole and make sure the hole is not clogged.
»Fill the battery with electrolyte (acid sulfide of 1.260 SpGr).
»Check the terminal voltage after you fill the battery with electrolyte (minimum 12 volts or original rated).

Q: How to store your battery properly?
A: Brand new battery is in dry condition. Before storing, make sure there is no damage to the dry battery. Keep the battery in a cool and dry place, and away from children and high temperature exposure. Make sure the aluminum foil cap is in good condition and no leak is found. Place it in the storing place that ensures 'first in first out'.
Filled/Wet Battery. When you store an electrolyte -filled battery, please charge it first and make it fully charged. Release all connections attached to the battery terminal. Keep the battery in low temperature, cool and dry place and away from children. Recharging once every 3 months is needed; if you want to keep the battery idle (not used) for longer time.

Q: How to install the new battery correctly?
A: »Release the NEGATIVE terminal connector to prevent a short circuit and then release the POSITIVE connector of your old battery.
»Loose the battery strap and remove the battery from the vehicle.
»Check the condition of the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE wire connector. Clean the wire and the connector wire edge. In case of corrosion, clean it up with iron brush. This is to make sure that the electricity flow via the cable is unhampered.
»The new battery to be installed must be in the 'fully-charged' condition.
»Place the battery in its proper position to correspond the position of the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE connecting wire and make sure it is not reversed.
»Attach the battery strap properly and make sure the battery's position is not shifted, tilt or changed while the vehicle is used. Tighten the battery strap.
»Connect the POSITIVE connection wire first, tighten it and then the NEGATIVE one. The size of the positive terminal is larger than the its negative terminal.
»Before the battery is used to start the engine, check the electricity connection by first turning the headlight on.
»When the headlight is properly on, the battery is ready to use to start the engine.

Q: How to maintain a battery appropriately?
A: Keep Clean. Keep the upper part of the battery dry, clean and free from corrosion. Check the vent hole and make sure it is free from dirt or unclogged. Adding distilled water. In case the liquid height is below the "LOWER LEVEL" line, add some distilled water until it reaches the "UPPER LEVEL". When is recharge required? In case the gravity of the electrolyte is less than 1,220 or the battery has been stored (± 3 month).

Q: How to choose the right electrolyte?
A: Electrolyte (sulfuric acid) that is suitable with the Indonesian climate contains specific gravity (SpGr), namely 1.260 at 20 °C.

Q: What are Cold Cranking Amperes, Voltage and Capacity?
A: CCA (Cold Cranking Ampere) is the ability of the battery to generates strong flow in a cold temperature (-17.8 °C). This is the minimum ability to start the engine.
Voltage refers the volt variant generated by the battery's positive and negative terminals, while capacity is the battery's ability to store and generate small flow of 1/20 nominal capacity for 20 hours.

Q: Precautions and first aid: batteries and electrolyte impact to safety and environment
A: »Electrolyte may cause burnt. Be cautions with electrolyte for batteries. In case of overflow, stains your clothes or skin, flush with water and neutralize with the diluted baking soda. In case of eye contact, immediately flush with clean and cold water for 5 minutes and consult a physician at once.
»In case the electrolyte is swallowed, gulp down with water or drink in large quantity followed by magnesia milk, egg or cooking oil and consult a physician immediately.
»Creating acid solution for your battery. Always add thick electrolyte to water, never add water to the thick electrolyte. Keep electrolyte in a tightly closed plastic container, keep from the children reach, and do not keep it in an open place subject to the rain and sun heat.
»Batteries may explode. Batteries produce explosive gas while used on vehicles or during their recharging outside the vehicles. Keep from fire sparks, flame or cigarette buts. Make sure the connecting wire joints on the positive and negative terminal are tight otherwise it may spark fire. Cover the surface of the connecting wire with isolator will avoid sparks from the positive terminal to the vehicle body. Make sure the electrolyte is not below the lower level line or above the upper level line.
»Wear goggles. When working close to a battery, always wear goggles. When you recharge your battery, do so in a place with good ventilation. First put off the re-charger before releasing the recharging wire.
»The environment. Battery electrolyte is hazardous to the environment. Never dispose electrolyte or its used bottles anywhere. The elements inside a battery are equally harmful. Do not break the case of a used battery or dump a used battery anywhere. Used batteries may be recycled and should be collected at official disposal place.
